When will I recieve my stimulus check

Sunday, May 24th, 2009

This years 2009 stimulus check are now starting to go out.  I’m not sure of the method they are using to send them out so it is different then last years stimulus check that was based on the last two digits of your Social Security Number or SSN.  The process the government is using is sending out letters to those that are eligible saying that they will be receiving a stimulus check, then a few weeks later they will receive a check or transfer into their account.

Why they didn’t just send the checks directly instead of a letter, I’m not sure.  It would have been much easier on everyone had they just done that.

For those of you that are working you should see your ~$20/week extra showing up in your weekly paychecks from the tax adjustment that Obama started.  Over the course of the entire year, you’ll get about what you got last year as a stimulus check.

Monday, May 18th, 2009

With all of the talk about the $250 2009 stimulus checks going out recently, there is a way for many of you to save money and get back a large refund this next April from this recently passed stimulus package.

One of the parts of the stimulus package was to provide a $2,500 tax credit, per student for this year.  It isn’t a stimulus check but the value of it much greater then the $250 stimulus check going out this year or the $600 / $1200 stimulus check from last year.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park will receive $64 million in stimulus money from this year’s 2009 Stimulus Package.   The national park will use this money for upgrading roadwork, restrooms and trail maintenance.  These upgrades will be split between Tennessee and North Carolina.

A majority of this $64 million stimulus money will go towards building a bridging extension off the Foothills Parkway in Tennessee.

These updates are going to create up to 1,500 jobs to perform these updates.  Which will help out the ailing economy.

The Great Smokies National Park is one of the most popular parks in the nation attracting up to 9 million people a year.  The annual budget that the park has is just under $20 million and has a backlog of upgrades that total over $200 million.  These stimulus funds that they received for the $64 million upgrade will go a great way towards updating the park and it’s infrastructure.

$1.2 million of the stimulus funds from the stimulus package is to improve 22 miles of horse trails in Tennessee and 10.4 miles into North Carolina.

2009 stimulus package causing higher roofing costs

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

The 2009 stimulus package that was passed by President Obama earlier this year provided a large budget to replace many of the roads in the United States.  This has lots of positive effects such as the obvious of replacing the roads and also being able to employ people to do these road updates.

The downside to these road updates is that they use a lot of asphalt and asphalt is a primary ingredient in making roofing shingles.  Rising petroleum costs contributed to some of the cost increase and asphalt is a derived from the crude oil by product of petroleum.

The price of asphalt has risen 57% from March 2008 to March 2009 and went up 3.8% from Feb to March this year alone.

Those people who are planning on replacing their roofs this summer may be paying quite a bit more then they were planning on had they done it last year as a result of this years 2009 Stimulus Package.

24 million Americans received a $250 2009 Stimulus Check on May 7, 2009

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

On May 7, 2009 the US Government made many Americans, 24 million to be exact a little bit richer.  One of the first rounds of $250 2009 stimulus checks went out recently making up nearly half of all checks that are going out to those that are eligible.  The single day total of money injected into the American people’s pockets was about $6 Billion dollars.  This is similar to to the $250 stimulus checks going out to those on Veterans Affairs pensions and Railroad Retirement Benefits.

These checks were made possible by congress who decided that elderly and those on Social Security shouldn’t be left out on this year’s stimulus package when they decided upon the $400 ($800 married) tax break credit for those that are still in the workforce.

$250 Stimulus check sent to a women who over 40 years ago

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

In a story that is almost comical, a man from Orchard Beach, MD says he just received a stimulus check for his mother.   His mother died in the year 1967, nearly 42 years ago.

A Social Security Administration official stated that they were rushing through as many as these stimulus checks to get them out as fast a possible and they weren’t double checking recordings on everyone that has been sent a check thus far.   In the case of Rose Hager, who died in 1967, she hadn’t received a Social Security check from the department since then but they had no record of her death so they presumed that she was still alive and well.  Thus, the Social Security Administration office sent her a 2009 stimulus check for $250.

There may be over 10,000 such cases where stimulus checks are being sent to someone that has passed away.

First Social Security check was in 2009

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

If you ware one of the many people who are on Social Security and wondering if you are getting a 2009 stimulus check it will depend on when you started receiving your social security.  The 2009 stimulus checks are for those who have started receiving their social security checks by the end of 2008 so that as of Jan 1, 2009 they were already in the system.  Even if you started up in Nov or Dec of 2008 you would be eligible for a 2009 stimulus check just like Vice President Joe Biden who started getting his Social Security checks in Nov 2008.

If your first social security check was sometime starting in 2009, even Jan or Feb 2009 you are not eligible for a 2009 stimulus check.  The way the rules were written for the 2009 stimulus package that was created and signed into law by President Obama stated that only those already on social security by the end of 2008 would get a 2009 stimulus check.

Good and the Bad of Alabama’s Federal Stimulus Money

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

The state of Alabama is receiving $3 Billion dollars from the US Government in this recent bailout.  This allocation is split 3 different ways

  • $1 Billion for Education
  • $1 Billion for General Government Operations
  • $1 Billion for Competitive Grants

The one area that was left out by the Alabama plan are for those Non-profit companies in the state of Alabama looking forward to receiving some cut of the Federal Stimulus bailout for each state.

These operational funds may not solve all of the problems within the state, but the operational funds allocated by the stimulus package can help create new jobs for the ailing economy.

For more information on the Stimulus Package plan for the state of Alabama you can visit www.stimulus.alabama.gov.
