Some Minnesota taxpayers may need to Amend their 2008 return

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

There have been several changes to taxes for the 2008 and 2009 tax laws.  And in some instances, like in Minnesota, they were not able to make all the corrected instructions for preparing the 2008 taxes in time.  The primary change that didn’t get changed is that they didn’t say to include the 2008 stimulus check refund they got last summer when filing for their 2008 taxes.  Everyone that got a 2008 stimulus check and didn’t note that on their 2008 tax return will need to amend their tax return.

Some other changes that were made for the 2009 tax year are:

  • Providing a one time payment of $250 for individuals on set/fixed incomes. (Social security, disabled veterans and retired gov. employees)
  • Farmers are the only people that can still use income averaging to calculate income/taxes.
  • There have been changes to the rates for capital gains on land and stock sales.
  • There are many changes to gains for built in provision involving S Corporations.
