There are provisions in the 2009 Stimulus Bill going through congress right now that will help all of those on Unemployment in 2009. First, it will add about $25/week to anyone claiming unemployment. Secondly, anyone that has unemployment benefits that would run out by March will have an extention added on to allow them to collect unemployment through the end of 2009. Third, the first $2,400 of unemployment benefits are nontaxable.
On both counts that is quite a bit of extra money being given to those on unemployment which is growing by the day. 500,000 new claims filed in Jan 2009, and who knows if Feb will beat out Jan yet. The average weekly payout for unemployment is $300. The $25 weekly add on is nearly 10% more per week for the average claim.
There may be even changes to COBRA, the insurance plan offered to anyone who lost their job.
All around, this is good news to help the unemployed with these stimulus clauses. However, not so good for the federal bank who is shelling out more money in unemployment benefits then ever in history. Regardless, this is start to help those losing their jobs.

It should be automatic for your extension on the unemployment benefits. So basically, it should automatically kick into effect for you.
But it still wouldn’t hurt to double check it to make sure your stimulus Unemployment are extended.
